Organisation and structure of the CMR
Directory Structure
The CMR is organised by department, then by module code:
- Each department or centre is represented by a folder named with a two
letter code, so for example the Department of Law is LW.
- Within each of these folders, each module hosted in the CMR will be
allocated a folder, on request. This gives a typical URL of something like
http://courses.essex.ac.uk/lw/lw101/
- There are a few extra folders at each level which contain support
materials, etc.
When accessing a course with either FrontPage or as a
drag and drop
shared drive, within each module folder:
- You will see a number of existing sub-folders:
- Any folders that begin with an underscore character (eg _private)
have been automatically generated when the web space was created. You
should ignore these folders
- A folder called images is automatically generated - if you
are using FrontPage you may choose to
organise your files by putting all image files into this folder.
- A folder called restricted will be provided. By default,
access to this folder is limited to members of the university, so that anything placed
in this folder will only be accessible from the University network; other
options for restricting access are available. For more information see
Copyright issues and restricting access (campus only).
- You should not delete these folders, however you may delete any
files you save within them.
- You will see a default homepage with the filename of default.asp (or default.aspx).
If you are using drag and drop publishing, then you should not
delete this file, it is responsible for displaying a list of your files on
the web. If you are using FrontPage publishing, then default.asp,
default.html, or index.html are all valid default page names.
Further options
On request, we can add a folder called 'shared' at the top level for each
module-code area, eg courses.essex.ac.uk/wa/shared
Editing rights to this area can be assigned to all staff in a department
or to selected individuals and it can be used for files shared between
several courses such as reading lists, administrative information for
students, stylesheets, etc.
Keeping things up to date
Each department should have a CMR Administrator, normally the
Departmental Administrator or Computer Officer. Please keep them informed
about your use of the CMR. In particular, let them know when you wish the
CMR to include links to your materials and if, at a later date, you wish the
links to be removed, either permanently or temporarily.
