It is up to you to agree a topic for your project with your supervisor. If you are on a specialist scheme, then the project must be related to the scheme that you are on. You may find inspiration by looking at the current project ideas proposed by members of staff, and information on prize winning past projects from previous years.
You have already covered the essence of project planning in CC201 and should be familiar with the process.
You should consider using project management software for CC301. This can be used to help produce GANTT charts, and keep track of your progress.
If you are using the Microsoft Project tool, then you may find it useful to consult the Microsoft Project Tutorial by Anjana Srikanth of Stylus Systems, Bangalore. It covers Project 2000, but the essential principles are also relevant to later versions.
Other project management tools are available, such as the free Gnome Planner, which is included in many Linux distributions and is available for Microsoft Windows, as well as the cross-platform Java-based Gantt Project, and the OpenProj tool (which can also read Microsoft Project files). See the Peltier.com list of free GANTT tools for other options.
It is also possible to create GANTT charts and manage projects using other tools, including spreadsheet software. Free templates are available, for example from www.vertex42.com (for OpenOffice and Microsoft Excel) and chandoo.org (Microsoft Excel, not tested with OpenOffice). There are also tutorials on project management using spreadsheet software, and other, older, sources of macros and instructions.
You will be expected to maintain a paper-based log book of your activities. This should be a contemporary record of your project work. You will be expected to show the log book to your supervisor at your regular meetings. You will also have to submit your log book with your final report.
There is a project open day on Monday, 22nd March in CSEE Lab 1 and 8 at which you can present your project to other students, and visitors.
Sample poster templates are available from the Final Year Project Information Page.
