Tras su extreno, llovieron las denuncias acusando al film de obsceno y cruel, pidiendo que se prohibiese; y es que nos encontramos ante un film extraordinario en el que los hechos se suceden sin ninguna conexión lógica, tan llenas de horror que el espectador queda absolutamente conmocionado. Es un film que no puede explicarse, debe ser contemplado. Como apuntó Dalí: "no dice ni quiere decir nada, es una simple constatación de hechos que en vez de ser unos hechos convencionales, fabricados, arbitrarios y gratuitos, son hechos reales o parecidos a los reales y por tanto enigmáticos, incoherentes, irracionales, absurdos, desligados y sin explicación".

Buñuel, que con 'El Perro Andaluz' pretendía provocar un revulsivo y con el que, por el contrario, consiguió gran prestigio, tendría que esperar un año para ver cumplido su propósito con 'La Edad de Oro' cuyo estreno protagonizó uno de los escándalos más sonados de la historia del cine saldándose con la destrucción total del local, una bomba lanzada a la pantalla y Buñuel abofeteado. Además, la película fue prohibida oficialmente durante décadas. Y es que Buñuel hizo una película antipatriótica, anticlerical y antireligiosa con la que pretendía atacar a los defensores del orden y ridiculizar sus principios eternos llamando expresamente por su nombre a los representantes de las leyes morales dominantes que se oponían a un mundo libre a través de unas imágenes que indignaron hasta a su amigo Dalí, que en un principio colaboró en el guión pero cuya aportación Buñuel desestimó más tarde por incompatibilidad de ideas.

Una constante en el cine de Buñuel es el ataque a la religión cristiana, concretamente al catolicismo. No hay daño más grande contra lo que no se quiere que el silencio, reprochaban ciertos intelectuales ateos a Buñuel y le preguntaban que si no creía en Dios, ¿por qué atacaba su existencia y al cristianismo poniéndolo así de actualidad constatemente? 'Simón del desierto' refleja los sentimientos religiosos que pervivían en el subconsciente del director que se declaró siempre en contradicción entre la atracción que sentía por los problemas religiosos y el rechazo que su conciencia y su razón le dictaban. Como hombre terco y estricto que era, lo que a Buñuel le convirtió en un especulador crónico sobre la imposibilidad social del cristianismo fue el contraste que siempre encontró entre la doctrina y la realidad.

Considerada una las cien mejores películas de la Historia del Cine y la mejor del cine español, 'Viridiana' es la primera película de Buñuel rodada en España tras su exilio. El argumento se centra en la figura de Viridiana, una joven que abandona el convento a instancias de un tío al que apenas conoce y decide, en coherencia con su vocación cristiana, fundar un asilo para mendigos. Pero las pretensiones de su primo Jorge son menos altruístas ... Según Buñuel, el film hubiera pasado desapercibido de no ser por el padre Fierro que, con ayuda de periódicos y emisoras vaticanas, armó tal revuelo en torno a la película que el mismísimo Franco solicitó verla. Aunque dicen que no encontró nada censurable en ella, la prohibió e incluso mandó destruir todas las copias por no llevar la contraria a sus ministros, salvándose sólo la enviada a Paris. 'Viridiana' es una película repleta de símbolos, que aluden entre otras cosas a la represión sexual, mensajes pesimistas acerca de la inutilidad de actos éticos individuales y supuestas blasfemias religiosas para referirse a la imposibilidad de bondad y pureza sobre la faz de la tierra.

In The Voyage, 17 year old Martin sets out on an odyssey through Latin America to find his father, last heard of working as an anthropologist in Brazil. He hopes his journey will serve as an important rite of passage, helping him to resolve his search for identity. He sets out by bicycle, from Tierra del Fuego to Peru, the Andes highlands and then on to the Amazon, finally reaching the Brazilian gold mine where his father now works as a prospector. Along the epic journey, Martin experiences Latin American myth and reality, and witnesses the absurdities and contradictions which the director, Fernando Solanas, believes represent modern-day Argentina. The film is half parody, half serious political tract, and the beauty and splendour of the scenery serves to illustrate that Latin America is too precious and unique to be despoiled by those who do not understand either its culture or history. Ken Loach is the master of the British realist tradition, and his new film Carla's Song is shot in the same you-are-there documentary style that gives all of his films their emotional propulsion. It follows a combustible, love-smitten Glaswegian bus driver George (Robert Carlyle of Trainspotting and The Full Monty fame) and the object of his affection, a troubled Nicaraguan dancer Carla (Oyanka Cabezas, remarkable in her first English language film) as they journey to her native land in the politically unstable atmosphere of the 1987 war between the Contras and the Sandinista government. Along the way they meet human rights worker Bradley (Scott Glenn, in a fierce performance), and learn that their love, mischievously fleshed out in a scene where they remove each other's clothes with their teeth, may not survive the chaos. "It is, " says the tremendously gifted Loach, " a film about the possibilities of people when they decide they will be together. "

Carmen's life is pretty complicated, yet is typical of a hard working journalist, wife, and mother of three children. Antonio, her third husband, is a workaholic who assumes that it is solely Carmen's responsibility to provide a warm and problem free home environment. In short, Carmen works like a man but still plays the traditional role of a married woman. The film is a bittersweet, amusing and honest look at how to be a woman and not die in the attempt.

Javi, Manu y Rai son amigos. Comparten esa edad en la que ni se es hombre ni se es niño, en la que se habla mucho de chicas y muy poco con ellas. El primero es el propio barrio, un barrio de grandes bloques de viviendas sociales, de ladrillo oscuro y arquitectura imposible. Allí hay pocas cosas que hacer, y en agosto aún menos. Dicen los informativos que son millones los habitantes de la gran cuidad que en estos días se van a la costa, y a Javi, a Manu y a Rai, les gustaría estar entre ellos. Juntos comprueban lo difícil que es salir del barrio, en definitiva, lo difícil que es crecer. Pero el tiempo en los barrios pasa más despacio, y en verano, ya se sabe, hay mucho tiempo libre. Demasiado como para no ocuparlo metiéndose uno en líos.

When the album 'Buena Vista Social Club' was released it quickly became a world-wide phenomenon selling millions of copies internationally and winning a Grammy. When Ry Cooder travelled to Cuba again in early 1998 to record a solo album with Ibrahim Ferrer - again with all the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club - Wim Wenders accompanied him with a small film crew, observing the musicians in the studio and tracing their lives in Havana. The film continued in the spring in Amsterdam where Buena Vista Social Club gave two concerts and ended, finally, in the summer in New York with a triumphal concert at Carnegie Hall. The result is an inspiring and uplifting story of a group of incomparable musicians recreating a bygone era with their fascinating reminiscences and awesome music.

In the Summer of 1936, before the outbreak of the civil war that plunged Spain into three years of agony and terror, 8 year old Moncho is beginning his first day of school. So begins Moncho's apprenticeship into life and knowledge guided by his worldly teacher. But as the military marches through Spain and the community is split in two, their friendship is put under unbearable pressure. Butterfly's Tongue is a beautifully shot film about the lessons of life that cannot be taught in school.

This movie tells three tales of people and how their relationship to dogs is symbolic of their own situations, all connected by the single tragic event of an automobile accident. First there is Octavio, who puts his dog in dog fights to earn enough money so that he can run away with his lover, Susana, who is pregnant and the wife of his brother, Ramiro. Then, there is the rich couple of supermodel Valeria and Daniel whose feelings of being trapped after a car accident is echoed by an incident when their dog becomes trapped as well. Finally, there is an ex-guerrilla, El Chico, whose discovery of a lost dog and its consequences inspire him to reunite with his own long-lost daughter.

Travel has been described as the search for displacement and self-discovery. These are the themes which dominate Colombian director Sergio Cabrera's fourth feature film. The film, based on the novel by Colombian writer Alvaro Mutis, tells the tale of three friends - Maqroll, Ilona and Abdul - on a quest to attain their life's dream: an old tramp steamer on which they hope to sail around the Americas. While Maqroll enlists as a crew member on a boat that takes him to Panama City, the frequently lost, but equally loyal, Ilona is already in that city, trying to make the best of it. Together, they open a brothel to earn the money necessary for Abdul to buy the ship. One day, a young woman, Larissa, appears in the brothel. Her passionate and tortured personality leads both Maqroll and Ilona to question what they once thought certain. Like his previous films, Ilona is a hotchpotch of stories, mixing characters and situations. It is comic in tone and concerned with issues that, at one point or another, touch a person, allowing him to move in a direction that he isn't accustomed to. After all, displacement often brings with it a certain underlying sense of consistency and commitment.

El Coronel espera. Le prometieron una pensión, y desde hace años le incumplen la promesa. Viernes tras viernes, trajeadito y solemne, se para ante el muelle aguardando la carta que anuncie la llegada de su pensión. Todos en el pueblo saben que espera en vano. Lo sabe también su mujer, que cada viernes lo mira prepararse ante el espejo para recoger la carta que hace años lo esquiva. Pero el Coronel cierra los ojos ante esta verdad tan evidente y se aferra a su sueño. Y es que, si no, ¿qué le queda? Porque en la casa del Coronel hay hambre. Su mujer es un saco de huesos comidos por la tos asmática, y al Coronel lo abochorna su pobreza, con bochorno de hombre decente. Contra viento y marea, contra el hambre, contra los reclamos de la esposa que repite como cantaleta: ¿Qué comeremos?, la respuesta del Coronel es tajante, una respuesta masticada por más de veinte años: Comeremos mierda.
The Colonel has been waiting many years for his military pension. Every Friday he goes down to the dock to meet the mail boat, and every Friday he must return home, dejected, without receiving his pension. He and his wife Lola recently lost their only son, Agustín, who was killed for his political ideals. They mortgaged their house to keep Agustín from being buried in a pauper's grave. Now, without money, the mortgage is due and they have nothing to eat. The only possession they have is their son's fighting cock. While the cock is the only thing that they have to remind them of their son, they also see it as their only salvation. The Colonel thinks he train the cock to fight and win big money in an upcoming fight, while Lola, who despises the cock and the death it represents, wants to sell it. The cock is also the source of envy that the entire town feels for this couple who have nothing.

En la noche de Navidad, como todas las noches, vende rosas para ganarse la vida y para comprarse el sueño de una fiesta con pólvora, estrenar ropa, y salir con su novio... pero la vida le depara una nueva cita con la soledad, la pobreza y la muerte. Mónica es la otra cara de una ciudad intensa y cruel como Medellín, Colombia, como la de cualquier ciudad en donde los niños de la calle que no tienen lugar en este mundo viven el tiempo inútil de su inexistencia.

Ciro Durán y Dunav Kuzmanich trabajaron en este guión el tema de los polizones: seres que se embarcan de forma clandestina, por mar o por tierra, para ingresar ilícitamente a países extranjeros. Basado en un hecho real, el guión cuenta la historia de seis jóvenes polizones colombianos, dos mujeres y cuatro hombres, que zarpan del puerto de Buenaventura en la costa Pacifíca de Colombia para encontrarse en la bodega de un buque carguero con rumbo a Nueva York. Durante la travesía, surgen los enfrentamientos que se pueden dar de la convivencia de seis personas totalmente diferentes pero dispuestas a todo con tal de lograr el "sueño americano". En plena travesía uno de ellos sufre un accidente que lo deja al borde de la muerte, es el momento en que todos deben poner a prueba sus propios valores y confrontarse al dilema de escoger entre la solidaridad o los sueños individuales.

Un grupo de inquilinos que vive en una vieja casa se ve enfrentado a un desalojo como consecuencia de la renovación del centro de la ciudad. Liderados por un eterno estudiante de leyes, evitan la expulsión mediante toda clase de triquiñuelas, hasta cuando el juez les notifica que tienen un plazo de diez días para desalojar. Ante la imposibilidad de evitar el desalojo por la fuerza. Jacinto, un exiliado español ingenia una original alternativa: La Estrategia del Caracol. El propietario de la casa y su abogado, recurren a toda clase de trucos como el chantaje, soborno, la amenaza y la violencia para lograr su cometido. Sin embargo los inquilinos en su afán por mantener viva su dignidad, se unen y florece una fuerza solidaria que logra al final de esta confrontación la victoria de lo imposible y por lo demás insolito.
Based on actual events, this film tells the story of the judicial decision to evict residents from a rented house, after the case had spent many years in court. The wealthy landlord can finally demolish the house and use the valuable lot for other purposes; meanwhile, the ten evicted residents, hemmed in and pressured by the law, devise a strategy so as not to remain homeless. They plan to move the entire house to another lot they have occupied so that, when the time comes to turn it over to the owner, all that is left will be the façade.

Una película colombiana de trama interesante, una viuda reclamando y vengando de manera especial la muerte de su compañero. Asesinado por todo el mismo pueblo, que muertos de la envidia deseaban que él muriera, unos para quedarse con sus cosas, otros para quedarse con su mujer. Una forma muy singular de ver la vida común y corriente como es Colombia.
A small-town usurer, "El Turco," is murdered, much to the relief of the townspeople of El Paraíso, all but three of whom had reason to wish him dead. When his body disappears from a makeshift grave, guilty hysteria grips the town in the form of ghostly sightings.

A Colombian/Spanish/Italian co-production, Sergio Cabrera's Golpe de estadio (Time Out), is a darkly comic allegory which ties together two of the dominant strands of Colombian life: football and civil unrest. The former, the implication is, unites nations, while the latter divides them. As for the comedy, the film is prefaced by a quote from the Zapatistas' Subcommandante Marcos: "In the face of horror, humour". Golpe de estadio begins with a group of Colombian soldiers, headed by Sgt Garcia (Cesar Mora), guarding a US-owned oil tower in south-eastern Colombia from a local group of guerrillas led by María (Amma Suárez) and Carlos (Nicolás Montero). At the same time, the vital 1994 World Cup qualifying game between Colombia and Argentina is taking place. The film, says 45-year-old director Sergio Cabrera, "stems from the desire to transform an imaginary story about a group of guerillas and a group of soldiers declaring a truce so that both can watch the only TV set in the village into a tragicomic metaphor for peace." But things get a little out of control when the national team scores the decisive goal: a helicopter pilot fires his guns in excitement, accidentally destroying the oil tower...
