EXAM REVISIONS: We will have two
exam revisions sessions. The first is Tues 24 April from 11:00-1:00. It will NOT be held in the room where class was taught, but
rather in the Teaching Centre, room TC-2.12 and 2.13 (joined-up rooms). This
session will cover my half – Term 1, see below.
o
The second session is Tues 1 May, also 11:00-1:00 in TC-2.12 and 2.13, and will be run by Enam,
covering Term 2 topics.
o
The 3-hour exam itself is currently scheduled for Mon 14 May
from 9am-12am, room tba.
PLEASE CHECK the official Exams Timetable page (http://www2.essex.ac.uk/academic/offices/exams/extt.htm) as
schedules may change!
o My session
will cover Term 1 topics, plus a
general description of the exam format and question types for my section.
Please see this file of comments on the revision session and exam preparation
in general (RevisingForLG232.pdf). If you have time, look
over the web materials before you come. Please also bring any Qs or problems you have
and ask about them. This revision session is driven by YOUR needs – it’s a good
time to speak up!
o I’ve also got a page with advice on How to Answer Data Problems (ie variation problems on the LG232 exam).
This is worth looking at before our session, as my half of the exam always
includes a data problem as one option.
o
New notes from Week 10 on Apparent Time and Patterns of Language Change
are available here and at week 10 coursepage.
o
We reviewed guidelines for referencing, and how to avoid suspicion of
plagiarism, in Week 7. That material is available here.
o
The Assignments page gives a choice of 4 assignments. Your essay is due Thurs 15 Dec.
o
The online attendance record is now active. It’s restricted to access from University of Essex
computers. If you miss more than two weeks, I will report to the Dept., as they
ask every term about this; I will also highlight your name on the online
record. Please note that out of the 5 people who missed more than 2 weeks in
recent years, 3 had to retake exams, coursework or the entire course – so there
is a strong correlation between coming to lectures and doing adequately on the
course!
o Please go to this
link: http://courses.essex.ac.uk/lg/lg232/LangHistForm.doc and download the Language
History Form as a Word Document. Then, please fill it out and EMAIL a
copy to me at patrickp@essex... You could fill it out
by hand, but it will be much easier for me if you do it in Word and email me a
copy. Then you can use as much room as you need. Please put your name!
o
The Online Notes page is now in place. It collects, in one place, all the lecture notes for the
course (normally they are scattered across the week-by-week outline). You can
find it here, and it is linked from the main
coursepage for this term.
o
Links to my Advice on Writing Essays for LG232 and Web Citations pages are available for use in writing assignments. Also here is the link
to the general Essay Advice page from the Dept.
