SC242: Assessment Information
You should read the Department's 'Rules of Assessment '
contained in the Green Book very carefully: copies are available
from the Departmental Office 6.339 and are distributed by Tutors
in classes during the first week of term. Make sure you have a
copy.
It is in your own interests to keep up to date with course
assignments. If you are having difficulties, you should discuss
them with the Undergraduate Director who, in 2003-3, will be Dr
Mike Roper (Room 6.330.ext.3045).
Handing in Essays and Assignments
Assignments should be handed in to the General Sociology Office
6.339. A form needs to be completed and a receipt should be
obtained.
Difficulties and Support
Note the Department has a Resource Room (5A.307) and a Student
Support Officer (Ms. Rowena Macaulay). If you experience
difficulties in producing your work, you should contact Rowena who
should be able to offer you support and/or advice.
The course will be assessed by course work during the year (50%)
and exam at the end of the year (50%).
For students taking this course as a full option, you
will be continually assessed and this takes place in three ways.
Each piece of work counts as one-third of the course-work
assessment.
An ESSAY from the list provided at the end of this
course outline.
One 'in class' PRESENTATION. Plus a written up script of
your notes and post-class 'evaluation' of the issues you and
others raised etc. The script is due within two weeks of the
presentation. You should also note that the presentation does not
count without the script. The script should provide sufficient
detail to enable the external examiner to be clear about what you
presented and how you did so. Further details and arrangements
will be dealt with in class by your class teacher.
The preparation of a JOURNAL based EITHER on a Part of
the course Or you can link themes/ideas/topics together from
across the course. The journal format should reflect your
engagement with the course and allows you to be more creative and
imaginative than is the case in a standard essay. Word length
should be around 2,500 words plus illustrations, data,
newscuttings, photos etc. Illustrating the journal is important -
the purpose is to let you express your 'criminological
imagination'.
Each component of the assessment is aimed at appraising different
forms of academic skill. You must produce at least one piece of
assessment each term. So if you choose to do a presentation in
Term 2, then you should prepare your Journal in Term 1 or Term 3.
The Exam: Note that the exam will contain questions based on the
key books you have been required to read during the year; as well
as more general questions.
