SC242: Key Readings

You should know that all assessed work should show clear evidence of familiarity with the relevant literature. In the recent past, too many exam papers and essays talk in a journalistic and 'common sense' fashion. YOU MUST know the key sources, theories and findings and be able to critically assess them. YOU MUST SHOW EVIDENCE OF SERIOUS READING. This reading list provides a guide - but you can track down additional sources by using the library properly. Don't forget to look at the Journals for past and current articles. Particularly useful are: British Journal of Criminology; Howard Journal of Criminal Justice; International Journal of Sociology of Law; Policing and Society, Criminology; Theoretical Criminology; Journal of Law and Society; Social Problems; Deviant Behaviour.

Books we recommend that you and your friends keep regular access to:

Eamonn CARRABINE, Pam COX, Maggy LEE, Nigel SOUTH, 2003, Crime in Modern Britain

Mike MAGUIRE, Rod MORGAN and Robert REINER (eds) The Oxford Handbook of Criminology NB 3rd edition 2003. At present the most comprehensive book available.

Sandra WALKLATE, 1998, Understanding Criminology

John MUNCIE, Eugene McLAUGHLIN (eds) Criminological Perspectives: A Reader, 2nd edition 2003. or 1st edition 1996. Very handy set of relevant readings.

David DOWNES and Paul ROCK Understanding Deviance N.B. 3rd edition, 1998. A good coverage of theory; can be a little 'heavy going' in places.

J. Robert Lilly, Francis T. Cullen, Richard A. Ball 2003/1995 Criminological theory : context and consequences

Yvonne Jewkes and Gayle Letherby (eds) 2003 Criminology : a reader
